Jane is “retired.” We put “retired” in quotes because Jane is well under 65 years old and had to stop working due to a disability. She applied for Social Security Disability Benefits and as part of the application she became eligible for Medicare. Once someone is on Disability for 24 months they become eligible for Medicare regardless of their age. She contacted us to find out more about her Medicare options and how they would compare to her current health insurance which she received through her spouse's employer. She had two main concerns: (1) health benefits and (2) cost.
We agreed to schedule an initial meeting where we would educate Jane on how Medicare works and compare the benefits and cost of Medicare with her spouse’s employer plan. Prior to the meeting we asked Jane to share with us some information to better understand her healthcare needs. We took this information and analyzed it against all the available Medicare options. We were able to narrow her options down to two solutions that she could compare with her spouse’s plan.
At our meeting Jane was able to see clearly her Medicare options and compare them to her spouse’s employer plan. We first looked at the health benefits then the cost. She realized that Medicare would offer improved benefits and lower her cost. She made an educated decision to enroll into a Medicare Advantage plan that offered health insurance and prescription drug coverage. In addition, the plan offered dental, vision, hearing, and a fitness benefit.
Jane said she appreciated our Educational Approach and the fact that we took the time to identify the Medicare Solution that best protected her healthcare. Had she not met with us she most likely would have stayed on her spouse’s plan; paying more in premium for less benefits than the Medicare plan she chose.
